The Society of Canadian Artists (SCA) is a national, non-profit artists’
organization dedicated to promoting the visibility and stature of the
visual arts. SCA has representation in all of the visual arts media.
History
In 1957, a group of Toronto artists created the Society of Co-operative
Artists. The SCA broadened its vision from local to national in 1972 when
it received its charter and non-profit status and became the Society of
Canadian Artists.
The SCA is committed to strengthening its national presence in Canada
by promoting excellence in traditional forms of artistic expression,
and by encouraging acceptance and growth of contemporary and experimental
forms of visual art.
What the Society does
- Organizes and administers public exhibitions of the work of members and non-members while maintaining a standard of artistic excellence.
- Gives leadership within the arts community in Canada by the encouragement of original, artistic expression and experimentation in all media and all visual art forms.
- Provides a milieu for artists through exhibitions, workshops, lectures and guest speakers.
- Recognizes the highest qualities in art through a program of awards.
About the SCA Logo
The SCA logo was designed at the end of 2003 to reflect the renewed vision and
direction of our Society.
SCA's full name is Society of Canadian Artists, or Societe des Artistes
Canadiens. In the Society's logo, the letters SCA and SAC are intertwined to
represent our Society's universality. The letter A is prominent as it
represents the most important part of our Society...the Artists/Artistes;
the letters S and C are artistically interwoven with the A to represent
the interconnectedness of the Artists/Artistes, the Society/La Societe, and
Canada/le Canada.
Finally, the appearance of the new logo as a whole entity is that of
intriguingly balanced asymmetry. This graphic was designed to represent the
creative diversities of a membership that comes together to be the Society of
Canadian Artists/La Societe des Artistes Canadiens.
