The Society of Canadian Artists is saddened by the recent passing of Leah Dockrill, SCA.
In addition to a distinguished education and non-art professional career, Leah also developed a thirty-year art practice that included painting, collage and digital art. Leah’s artwork was exhibited throughout North America and won numerous awards, such as the Gold Artist Award in August 2018 from Art Ascent: Art & Literature Journal.
Leah was also an Elected Member of the Society of Canadian Artists (2000). Included in this post are a few of her paintings, including “Grey Day Gros Morne” that had recently been juried into the SCA's prestigious 54th Open International Juried Exhibition and for which she was the SCA’s featured artist on September 1, 2022.
Her obituary is as follows:
“DOCKRILL, Leah – Passed away peacefully at home in Toronto, on Thursday, September 8, 2022. Leah was born in Halifax and attended Halifax and Dartmouth schools. She earned her B.A., B.Ed. and a LL.B. from Dalhousie University, and a Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS) from the University of Alberta. She taught high school, worked as a reference librarian, and practiced law. However, Leah's most enduring and compelling occupation was creating art.
She was an accomplished and award-winning artist, whose paintings and collages were exhibited in
galleries in Canada and the United States. Many of her artworks were published in art and literature
journals and reviews and she was an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists and the Colour and Form Society. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Chris Dockrill.”
