Meet Brandy Saturley: A Canadian Visual Artist Trailblazer

Brandy Saturley stands at the forefront of contemporary Canadian art, her vibrant canvases echoing the pulse of the nation. Hailing from Victoria, BC, her artistic journey has been a testament to relentless innovation and a profound connection to her homeland. She is a trailblazer and acclaimed Canadian Visual Artist.

With an illustrious career spanning solo exhibitions across Canada, Saturley has carved a niche with her compelling bodies of work. Notable among these are her acclaimed showcases such as '#ICONICCANUCK' and 'Canadianisms: A Half Decade Inspired by Canada', the latter a testament to her deep-seated exploration of Canadian identity.

Saturley's contributions to the Canadian artistic landscape have not gone unnoticed. She is the proud recipient of prestigious accolades, including the esteemed Fleck Fellowships from the Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity. Moreover, her artistic prowess secured her a coveted invitation only residency from the esteemed Pouch Cove Foundation in Newfoundland, Canada.

In 2017, Saturley's impact reverberated throughout the artistic community as she claimed her spot among the top Canadian Artists for Canada 150, an honor bestowed upon her by 'The Canadian Art Junkie'. Her artistic journey was further immortalized in the 2019 documentary film, 'The Iconic Canuck', a testament to her enduring influence.

Saturley's art transcends boundaries. Her touring public solo exhibition 'Canadianisms: A Half Decade Inspired by Canada' captivated audiences with its visual storytelling, inviting viewers on a profound exploration of Canadian culture and identity.

Saturley's artistry has graced the pages of esteemed publications and platforms, including CBC Arts, Forbes, and Whitehot Magazine NYC, among others. Her self-published works and portfolio are on file with ARTEXTE in Montreal and the National Gallery of Canada Library and Archives, a testament to her enduring legacy.

Brandy Saturley's art is more than mere brushstrokes on canvas; it's a vibrant tapestry weaving together the essence of Canada's cultural landscape. With each stroke, she paints a portrait of a nation, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of discovery and reflection.

Contributions to the Artistic Community

In nearly two decades as a professional full-time Canadian artist, 17 of those years self-representing, her contributions have been numerous and oftentimes undocumented as she believes an important part of her responsibility as a professional Canadian Visual Artist is to be an educator.  As artists in this Canadian Art community Saturley believes our role is to educate every person we encounter about Art and the Arts in Canada. Having worked with Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame to become the first artist-in-residence she painted live on site while engaging with school groups from the community.

The Art of Speaking About Art

Public speaking is an important part of her career including Professional development talks with CARFAC Edmonton to educate other emerging artists about how to build a career as a Canadian artist. Contracted to exhibit her work in solo exhibitions with public galleries in Alberta, along with a speaking engagements discussing her unique “Canadianisms’ a body of work that has been growing since 2010.

Perhaps her biggest speaking engagement was at the Royal College of Art in London, UK where the artist attended summer school in 2019 and presented her work and spoke about her practice at The Gorvy Theatre in front of esteemed educators and fellow artists from all over the world about her distinctly Canadian content and paintings.

Artist As Juror

Saturley has also been invited to engage with secondary and primary school students all over Canada about her work. She also worked as juror for the City of Saanich, public art jury for Canada150 and for the Canada International Art Competition 2024.

Artist as Writer with a Top Canadian Art Blog

Her personal blog, 'ICONOGRAPHY' as a Canadian Artist and about Art in Canada is a top five blog on Canadian Art. Saturley created and self-funded the ‘People of Canada Portrait Project’ in which she collaborated with regular Canadians nationwide in painting their portraits.
