Geoff Nagel is a British Columbia representational oil painter specializing in landscapes, cityscapes, nature, people and - generally speaking - experiences from his world travels

Inspired by the paintings of his grandmother and great-grandmother, Geoff Nagel began oil painting at age 11 with a learn-to-paint set that his mother bought for him with trading stamps. As expected, these early works - usually copied from National Geographic - now seem crude, but they set the hook for a life-long passion for capturing the world with images. Formally trained and employed as an engineer, he spent 27-years at Eastman Kodak travelling the globe while immersed in a culture of photography. At Kodak, Nagel mastered important concepts about light science, colour theory, composition, and most importantly, how to "see" the world with a discerning eye. While photography was his primary tool for expression during those year, his still life paintings from this period won two local art shows. Retired from the cubicle world since 2018 and with the children grown, Nagel has rededicated himself to painting. While he still visions subjects with a photographer's eye, painting allows him to change the composition, lighting, and even colour to transform what would have been a decent photo into a much more enticing painting. Nagel characterizes his painting method as "very old-school" Photoshop. To offer his work at a lower price point, he has also been creating limited-edition giclee prints of his paintings where he does all of the photography and print colour proofing. In addition to being an elected member of SCA, Nagel is also an "active" (juried) member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

Since resuming painting in 2018, he has exhibited in multiple national, regional, and local shows. These include:

  • SCA's 53rd Open International Exhibition, 2021, 1st Prize of Excellence ($1000)
  • SCA's 55th Open International Exhibition, 2023
  • SCA's 2024 Open International On-line Exhibition, 2024: Umbrellas, Oil on Canvas, 24"x48"
  • A one-man show of 15 paintings at the Marmalade Cat in Kelowna BC in 2023
  • Eight shows at the Federation Gallery, Vancouver BC, including three open international juried exhibitions between 2022 and 2024
  • A five-city touring show sponsored by the Alberta Society of Artists in 2019
  • Six shows hosted by FCA regional chapters between 2022 and 2024
  • Two member exhibitions at the Lake Country Art Gallery, Lake Country BC
  • One exhibition at Gallery Vertigo, Vernon BC, 2021
  • Exhibited twice at Art Walk, Lake Country BC, 2021 and 2022. Art Walk is a 2-day show considered to be the largest art show in the interior of BC, i.e., between Vancouver and Calgary.
