“My primary concern in approaching a painting is the subject’s potential for use of pattern. Deriving inspiration from patterns discerned in natural or man-made forms, I attempt to create an appreciation of the dynamic qualities inherent in those forms. Compositions usually consist of a simplicity of major elements realized through a complexity of tonal and textural patterns. My visual statements are a culmination of combining those strong patterns with a sense of fine detail”.

His earlier years were spent in Saskatchewan. Upon graduating from grade twelve, he moved to Calgary where he attended the Alberta College of Art & Design for four years, earning his Diploma of Applied Arts by mid-1969.

After leaving the College, he worked for five years with a firm prominent in architectural illustration, and a few years with a company as Art Director. In 1977, he established his own firm, specializing in architectural illustration.

About 1987, Rene Thibault began to paint for its own relevance.

Regionally, his works have been exhibited through the Visual Arts Alberta Association and with various commercial galleries since 1989, including the Collectors’ Gallery Of Art since 2006. He also has been represented in several curated group exhibitions by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA). A few of these have been two-year traveling exhibitions, presented in selected Alberta communities by the AFA.

Nationally, he has participated as a member in juried group exhibitions with the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, the Federation of Canadian Artists, and the Society of Canadian Artists, receiving jury awards in many of these exhibitions.

Internationally, he has been juried into group exhibitions by the Salmagundi Club at the Center for American Art in New York, NY (awarded a Certificate of Merit by the jury), the Philadelphia Water Color Society, PA, the National Watercolor Society in San Pedro, CA, and the Royal Watercolour Society in London, UK.
