2020 New Elected Members

Congratulations to our newest members

The Society of Canadian Artists 2020 Elected membership jury recently concluded and 24 Canadian artists were selected as Elected members of the SCA.  Our new artists represent a unique variety of styles, mediums and subjects.  We commend all the artists who applied and encourage those who may not have been accepted this time to keep creating and submit to our next jury.

Thank you to Ann Kruzelecky, SCA-Hon, who served as this year’s Elected membership jury coordinator. And a special thank you to the 5 jurors, representing all regions of Canada who participated in this endeavor.

Take a moment to meet our new members

Alijan Alijanpour, SCA

North York, ON

When I work with line and colour, I let the emotion and my ancestors guide me…I am but a vessel. I think to myself, “Ok, Alijan…you are not an ‘artist.’ God gave you this gift, and so it is through Source that you understand how to express yourself in this world: on canvas.” I heed my calling, as this is my duty. It is my blessing that once I fulfill this destiny; I am left with untold riches.

Tom Ashbourne, SCA

Wellington, Prince Edward County, ON

As an art lover and collector, my work is eclectic – an exploration of colours, shapes and textures. After a successful career as a corporate executive, I joined the artistic community as a sculptor, my favourite art form. I found my passion and myself in the world of fine art.

My sculptures exist as an extension of my artistic experiences. As a sculptor, I reveal the stone’s essence and vision of its true self. My pieces are contemporary and abstract, inviting you to experience them within your own context and personal interpretation.

Jocelyne Bellemare, SCA

Boucherville, QC

Born in Montreal, Jocelyne Bellemare lives and works in Quebec, at Boucherville. She holds a BA in History of Art (UQAM) and holds several private training courses in visual arts. For more than 35 years, she made a career in the cinematographic world as a make-up artist and joined her passion for painting. She now devotes herself full time to her works. She has participated in various individual and collective exhibitions on jury selection in Quebec. Her works are the subject of various private collections in Canada and the United States.

My artistic achievements propose an incursion into the “inner world” with symbolic and mythical connotations, at the interstice of the abstract figurative. Guided by intuition and without a final concept, my paintings are characterized by the combination of an abstract touch and a pictorial language, superimposing texture and material, combining layers of glaze and pastels; I construct and deconstruct them in the breath of my visions, in constant search for a haptic prescience. My painting suggests an introspective connection that can help to question the intimate links between consciousness and time.

Monica Burnside, SCA

Wendy Carmichael-Bauld, SCA

Burlington, ON

After exhibiting abroad and visiting many iconic galleries overseas, I’m inspired by many of the old masters and their use of chiaroscuro lighting—that being the gradation of light and dark shadows to create dramatic illumination of form. I find beauty in everyday items in my immediate space and I enjoy rendering these precious objects in a type of time capsule. Through deep study and observation, these inanimate objects serve to define my work and present a platform to explore my relationship with the world around me—like a personal narrative.

Shaukat Chaney, SCA

Cumberland, ON

My name is Shaukat Chaney. I am a sculptor/painter from Ottawa. My work is abstract in form. My paintings are curvilinear, colour field with hard edges. I look forward to meeting my fellow artists from across Canada and exhibiting with them.

Caroline Hallat, SCA

West Kelowna, BC

West Kelowna based visual artist and sculptor, Caroline Hallat has been honing her skills in painting and sculpting for many years. She grew up in South Africa during apartheid which created within her a deep feeling of compassion and passion for life in its many forms.

Originally a graphic designer, Caroline blended her design skills with her passion for scupting and painting, bringing about a perfect marriage of her two passions. She graduated in fine art at the University of Westminster in London, UK. She travels extensively for viewing and studying great works of art. When not at her easel she enjoys sculpting in wet clay.
